Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston has been a highlight machine since he took over the starting job on Oct. 27 — both good and bad.

From his animated pregame speeches to his high interception totals to his leading multiple touchdown drives in the middle of a snowstorm in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Winston hasn’t always been effective, but he has always been entertaining.

That was never truer than Monday night, when Winston threw for 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos. That would have been a great stat line, except Winston also threw three interceptions — including two pick-sixes.

Both interceptions that were returned for touchdowns were backbreaking.

The first came late in the second quarter, with Cleveland driving for a potential go-ahead score after the two-minute warning. On the seventh play of the drive, Winston — who had led the Browns to the edge of the red zone — was picked by Nik Bonitto, who returned the ball 71 yards to give the Broncos a 21-10 lead.

In true Winston fashion, immediately following Bonitto’s score, he led an 11-play drive in under 90 seconds for a touchdown.

Winston had a chance to play hero in the fourth. With Cleveland taking possession with under three minutes to go trailing 34-32, a field goal or a touchdown could have won the game.

But one play after the Browns converted a third-and-12, Ja’Quan McMillan intercepted Winston for a 44-yard score that gave Denver a 41-32 lead.

That gave the Broncos a two-score lead with less than two minutes to go. And for good measure, Winston was intercepted again seven plays later.

The game was a microcosm of Winston’s career.

In 103 games, he has thrown for 152 touchdowns — and 106 interceptions. The last time Winston played in over 10 games in a season was 2019, when he threw for a whopping 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns — as well as 30 interceptions.

It’s fitting, then, that he set a unique record Monday night. His 668 combined passing yards — including what he threw to his teammates and the return total by Denver defenders — is the most in NFL history.

“I know I’m better than this,” Winston said. “I’m just praying for the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes.”
